Top Bridal Veil Questions Answered

BY: JULIE | POSTED ON: DECEMBER 10TH, 2012
You asked, we’re answering.  Below find the most common questions brides as us about bridal veils.  I’ve asked the expert, Jolene Picone, from Veil Trends to help me answer these questions.
1.  When it comes to veils are there any “rules”?
Jolene:  Honestly no.  There really aren’t any rules, because accessories do what they always do, which is accentuate an individual’s style. You can’t say one look is wrong when it’s perfect for someone else.  I have “rules” in my own mind as a designer that I follow, but it’s based on personal preference and I like pieces to flow with the overall look. However I can say in the past that I have made veils for brides that I did not particularly like details of because it un-balanced them.  However, they were confident about their look so it’s not my place to persuade.
Julie:  No hard and fast rules, but I do think there are some general guidelines.   If you’re wearing a very full skirt, having a fuller veil looks more balanced. Likewise, if you are wearing a sheath dress, a slimmer veil, particularly if it is long, looks nice. Having said that, I do love the look of a sheath dress with a shorter full bubble veil.  If you have a train and you want to wear a long veil, then you should have it extend past the hem of the train by at least a few inches.  If  it’s inches shorter than the hem of the train it has that look that people get when the hem of their pants is too short.    Also, having a long veil that is as wide as the width of the train tends to look best.
2.  For elbow length or longer veil styles, where should the comb be placed?
Jolene:    I think the more important question to ask is, how are you wearing your hair?  That makes all the difference.  If you have a high bun, you may wear it underneath the bun.  However, if you are wearing a blusher, the comb should be toward the top of your head so that the blusher falls correctly against your face.
Julie:  This is the most common question I receive in Encore Bridal’s showroom.  Basically, anywhere between the middle of the top of your head and the middle of the back of your head.  It is dependent on your hairstyle and the look you are going for.  Depending on the veil fullness at the comb, wearing it on the top of your head will give a more youthful, princess-like look and will allow the veiling to drape over your shoulders.  Wearing it toward the back of your head will give it a more streamlined look and will make the veil fall behind you.  Bouffant and bubble veil styles are typically worn higher on the head.

3.  How popular is it to wear the traditional blusher over a bride’s face when walking down the aisle? Is this too formal for a garden wedding?
Jolene:   A traditional blusher can be worn anywhere, at a garden wedding or on the beach.  It is a tradition, which makes it special. You do not need to be in a church to wear this look.  Brides are typically for it, or opposed completely.  It is still very popular and we are constantly adding blushers to veils.

4.  What color veil should a bride buy?
Jolene:  Please, please, please get a color that look great with your skin type!  I have seen pale brides in bright white and thought….NO!!!  Go Ivory.  I have also see the same bride in a pale pink or blush and thought, that looks perfect.  Darker complexions can pull off white much better, but I always prefer Ivory because it is SO much softer looking.
Julie:  It’s also dependent on the color of your dress.  You can either match the shade of your dress, go a little lighter, or choose a completely different complimentary color (ex.  pink).  I think a creamy ivory dress with a true white veil clashes as well as a white or diamond white dress with an ivory veil.
5.  When do you take the veil off?  Is the veil just worn during the ceremony?
Jolene:   If the bride is wearing a long chapel or cathedral, we suggest taking it off before being announced at the reception.  Otherwise whether or not you choose to remove your veil is up to you.  Brides are still choosing to wear their veils to receptions, however the trend is to wear a veil for the ceremony and fascinator for the reception.
