Courtney & Justin via Style Me Pretty

I am re-posting this beautiful wedding from the Style Me Pretty website.
Thanks to A Brit & A Blonde, I will be eternally obsessed with weddings in Costa Rica. These two lovebirds wed in the exact spot they met five years prior – which just so happens to be on a Costa Rican beach. A winning combination that, after a trip to the gallery, will leave you speechless and smiling. Click here to see it all!

From the beautiful bride … My vision for our big day was for it to look “Vintage-Modern,” which Justin will eternally make fun of me for because he thinks that’s an oxymoron. I will eternally try and prove him wrong with every decorative decision I make. I was stuck in a rut, that I think many destination brides get in, of thinking that we had to have bright colors and Bird’s of Paradise for flowers, which really wasn’t us. When I realized I could have lace and light pink and Scrabble and still get married on the beach, it finally all came together.
There were so many details that I loved. I think the Scrabble place cards were were really cool and made everyone feel special, plus they were a nod to our geeky side. I really loved the table settings as a whole. Having family wedding pictures was a neat way for us to tie in our love of photos, family, and vintage. I also adored our ring bearer pillow, which my mom hand embroidered and surprised us with.
The very best part of the day was when Justin and I first saw each other. We were able to recreate the moment we first met back in 2007. The day of the wedding, I walked down the same path and Justin sat in the same spot that we did the day we met. It’s one amazing thing to have met in Costa Rica, and an extraordinary thing to be married in the same place 5 years later. Walking into that hotel lobby was the best thing I have ever done in my life, twice.

5 More of Your Top Bridal Veil Questions Answered

BY: JULIE | POSTED ON: FEBRUARY 12TH, 2013
A couple of months ago Jolene from Veil Trends, and I answered some of the questions that brides most frequently ask us about veils. Today we’re continuing to answer your questions about how to wear veils, veil colors etc…
1.   What hair styles look best with birdcage and blusher veils?
JOLENE:  I have seen birdcage and blusher veils worn with many different hair styles, however I think the best look is an up-do. (For ideas from Jolene on different ways to style this type of veil, view our Youtube Video)

2.  How much of the face should the blusher/birdcage veils cover?
JOLENE:  Depends on the look and the veil style.  For a shorter veil, I prefer the veil to angle across the face as opposed to a  horizontal line (see photo above).  I also like to place blushers across the nose because it keeps the tulle out of the brides lashes.  Then again, we design pieces to cover the whole face (ex. v1309 below).  We also have small blushers attached to fascinators from our 2012 collection (ex. v312 below).  In this case, the comb is always angled to the side with the flowers on the side front of the head, and the blusher just over the forehead and out of the eyes.

3.  What is the best style of veil if you are planning to wear your hair down or partially back (half up/half down)?
JOLENE:  I like a fingertip or ballet length if the brides hair is longer.  If it’s a short cut and barely able to be pulled back I would suggest a double layer or something above the elbows.

4.  When would you suggest choosing a veil with a sewn edge  vs. a raw cut edge?
JOLENE:  That is a tough question because it really depends on the dress.  I am always looking at what’s on the dress.  If the bride likes a certain length that hits a bow, flower, or lace pattern on the dress, I think  a raw edge veil is best so you don’t cut a line through that detail.
JULIE:  I agree that it depends on the dress.  If you have a simpler dress with less embellishment, having an edging on the veil (ex. 1/2″ satin edge, lace edging, beaded edge) can really complete the look.  However, if the dress already has a lot of detail or has raw edges, I think having a veil with a raw cut edge (no edge), looks best.  It also depends on how much you want the veil to stand out.  Having an edge makes the veil more noticeable.

Christos Lorena – a tulle dress with raw cut edges, looks best with a raw cut edge veil.  Notice this veil length perfectly hits the point where the skirt flairs.

Priscilla of Boston 4517 is a silk satin gown.  It was paired with a 1/2″ satin edge veil.  In this case the veil purposefully creates the look and gives pulls the final look in a specific direction.
5.  Veil Trends offers a range of colors including “beige”, “bronze”,  and “oyster”.  When should brides choose a colored veil?
JOLENE:  Brides with dark skin look absolutely incredible in a bronze veil. It is so stunning!  I believe a bride with dark skin can pull off bronze even if it’s not in her dress color.  We had a bride who once wore bronze shoes and matched the veil to it.  Other colors can depend on the color of the dress. Oyster looks really great with platinum colored dresses, because they are not ivory at all.  Also deeper Ivory dresses or two-toned Ivory gowns look great with Beige.  Gown designers are always switching up colors, adding more grey undertones and taupe or blush colors, that’s when you can’t simply pick ivory or white.

Top Bridal Veil Questions Answered

BY: JULIE | POSTED ON: DECEMBER 10TH, 2012
You asked, we’re answering.  Below find the most common questions brides as us about bridal veils.  I’ve asked the expert, Jolene Picone, from Veil Trends to help me answer these questions.
1.  When it comes to veils are there any “rules”?
Jolene:  Honestly no.  There really aren’t any rules, because accessories do what they always do, which is accentuate an individual’s style. You can’t say one look is wrong when it’s perfect for someone else.  I have “rules” in my own mind as a designer that I follow, but it’s based on personal preference and I like pieces to flow with the overall look. However I can say in the past that I have made veils for brides that I did not particularly like details of because it un-balanced them.  However, they were confident about their look so it’s not my place to persuade.
Julie:  No hard and fast rules, but I do think there are some general guidelines.   If you’re wearing a very full skirt, having a fuller veil looks more balanced. Likewise, if you are wearing a sheath dress, a slimmer veil, particularly if it is long, looks nice. Having said that, I do love the look of a sheath dress with a shorter full bubble veil.  If you have a train and you want to wear a long veil, then you should have it extend past the hem of the train by at least a few inches.  If  it’s inches shorter than the hem of the train it has that look that people get when the hem of their pants is too short.    Also, having a long veil that is as wide as the width of the train tends to look best.
2.  For elbow length or longer veil styles, where should the comb be placed?
Jolene:    I think the more important question to ask is, how are you wearing your hair?  That makes all the difference.  If you have a high bun, you may wear it underneath the bun.  However, if you are wearing a blusher, the comb should be toward the top of your head so that the blusher falls correctly against your face.
Julie:  This is the most common question I receive in Encore Bridal’s showroom.  Basically, anywhere between the middle of the top of your head and the middle of the back of your head.  It is dependent on your hairstyle and the look you are going for.  Depending on the veil fullness at the comb, wearing it on the top of your head will give a more youthful, princess-like look and will allow the veiling to drape over your shoulders.  Wearing it toward the back of your head will give it a more streamlined look and will make the veil fall behind you.  Bouffant and bubble veil styles are typically worn higher on the head.

3.  How popular is it to wear the traditional blusher over a bride’s face when walking down the aisle? Is this too formal for a garden wedding?
Jolene:   A traditional blusher can be worn anywhere, at a garden wedding or on the beach.  It is a tradition, which makes it special. You do not need to be in a church to wear this look.  Brides are typically for it, or opposed completely.  It is still very popular and we are constantly adding blushers to veils.

4.  What color veil should a bride buy?
Jolene:  Please, please, please get a color that look great with your skin type!  I have seen pale brides in bright white and thought….NO!!!  Go Ivory.  I have also see the same bride in a pale pink or blush and thought, that looks perfect.  Darker complexions can pull off white much better, but I always prefer Ivory because it is SO much softer looking.
Julie:  It’s also dependent on the color of your dress.  You can either match the shade of your dress, go a little lighter, or choose a completely different complimentary color (ex.  pink).  I think a creamy ivory dress with a true white veil clashes as well as a white or diamond white dress with an ivory veil.
5.  When do you take the veil off?  Is the veil just worn during the ceremony?
Jolene:   If the bride is wearing a long chapel or cathedral, we suggest taking it off before being announced at the reception.  Otherwise whether or not you choose to remove your veil is up to you.  Brides are still choosing to wear their veils to receptions, however the trend is to wear a veil for the ceremony and fascinator for the reception.
